An ergonomic assessment, also called an ergonomic risk assessment, is a process used to evaluate a workspace, equipment, and job tasks to ensure they are designed to promote comfort, safety, and efficiency. The main goal is to reduce the risk of injury and strain, especially from repetitive motions, poor posture, or incorrect workstation setup.
Evaluating workstation setup:
Assessing seated or standing posture, desk and chair height, monitor placement, keyboard and mouse positioning, and other ergonomic factors based on the individual's body type. It may also include
analysis of how mobile devices or tablets are used, and how to improve phone call ergonomics.
Identifying risk factors:
These might include repetitive movements, awkward postures, unsuitable furniture or equipment, prolonged sitting or standing, and forceful movements.
Recommending improvements:
Suggestions may include adjusting desk/chair height, using ergonomic tools (e.g. supportive chairs, footrests, laptop stands), encouraging movement breaks, or adopting new working postures.
Personalizing for individual needs:
For employees with existing conditions (e.g. back pain, carpal tunnel, tendonitis), assessments are tailored to minimize strain and promote recovery.
The outcome is a more comfortable and productive workplace, with a reduced risk of repetitive strain injuries (RSIs), headaches, neck and back pain, or eye strain.
Ergonomic assessments can be carried out in offices, home offices, labs, manufacturing environments, and more.
